If there is one piece of Fishing tackle that has revolutionised the carp Fishing scene it would have to be the advancement in Fishing reels. The introduction of Shimano's 'Baitrunner' Fishing reel couldn't have been a more exquisite invention for the carp angler. Now of procedure they are not just used for carp fishing but other specimen hunters too.
What makes carp reels stand out from normal types of reel?

A carp reel has two clutches - a normal clutch that you would have set up to match the breaking strain of your fishing reel and a second much lighter clutch. To understand why this is important you will need to know the underlying principle behind the main recipe used for carp fishing.
The main rig used for carp fishing is the bolt rig. As the name suggest this rig causes the fish to bolt, now unless you have lightening quick reactions and can write back to that preliminary bolt one of two things is going to happen:
a. Your rod gets wrenched out of its rest and dragged in to the lake.
b. The preliminary powerful surge of the carp snaps your fishing line in an instance.
More often than not though carp anglers will not sit there holding their rods waiting for a bite - sometimes they will go for weeks without having a bite - so their rods are settled on a rod rest. Placing the rod on a rod rest means that you will obviously not have a occasion of catching that rod before it gets whizzed of in to the lake by a startled carp. To get around this anglers used to leave the bale arm of the reel off so that when the fish bolted it would just pull line of the reel. This was a fine explication if it wasn't windy. Introduce a bit of wind in to the mix and suddenly you'll find a tangled mess of line around your reel. This is that last thing you want when you've a monster fish on the end of that line.
Now that you've got some background you will no doubt see the need for this second lighter clutch. Just like how carp anglers have in years gone by have cast out their bait, you do the same thing - cast your bait out and then set your rod up on your rod rest or rod pod, but here's the difference, at this point you engage the second lighter clutch. The second clutch puts just adequate tension on the line to stop it being striped from the reel by the wind - but when a carp bites it will let line strip freely from the spool preventing line breakages and tackle getting dragged in to the water.
