What Types of Fishing Reels Are There?

Like Fishing Rods, your range of Fishing reels is simply huge. You can buy reels for Fishing in freshwater, reels for Fishing off boats, reels for fishing off beaches, Alvey fishing reels, electronic fishing reels and everything in between. Don't be too involved or overwhelmed by this though; it's not hard to get the right reel for what you want. A lot of reels can be interchanged and used for a range of dissimilar types of fishing.

Overhead reels are primarily used on boats when you are trawling or bottom fishing. They are not very easy to cast with, and you often end up with tangles if you try to do it! Spinning reels can be used for everything, together with fly fishing, fresh water fishing, beach fishing and off the rocks or a boat. I prefer these as they can be used in every situation, and you can get transfer spools that you switch nearby depending on the size of fish that you are going for. In saying this, nothing beats a good overhead for trawling!

Reels are made by a number of dissimilar manufacturers, and sticking to the larger ones will regularly certify that you get a good potential rod. However, you can absolutely buy a few cheap rods if that is what you want to do. I have bought a lot of gear off eBay for a tenth of the price you pay in any place else and it's lasted me fine. When picking your reel, ensure that the line that you want to use is going to fit on the reel, and that the strengths match each other (there is no point having a reel that's rated at 8 pounds and running 50 pound braid!).
